Halloween

The modern holiday of Halloween has its origins in the ancient Gaelic festival known as Samhain . The Festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is erroneously regarded as 'The Celtic New Year'. Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The Ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, where the bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them. When the Romans occupied Celtic territory, several Roman traditions were also incorporated into the festivals. Feralia, a day celebrated in late October by the Romans for the passing of the dead as well as a festival which celebrated the Roman Goddess Pomona, the goddess of fruit were incorporated into the celebrations. The symbol of Pomona was an apple, which is a proposed origin for the tradition of bobbing for apples on Halloween.

SYMBOLS
The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is one of Halloween's most prominent symbols. This is an Irish tradition of carving a lantern which goes back centuries. These lanterns are usually carved from a turnip or swede (or more uncommonly a mangelwurzel). The carving of pumpkins was first associated with Halloween in North America, where the pumpkin was available, and much larger and easier to carve. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their home's doorstep after dark.

The jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard drinking old farmer who tricked the devil into climbing a tree, and trapped him by carving a cross into the trunk of the tree. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack which dooms him to forever wander the earth at night. For centuries, the bedtime parable was told by Irish parents to their children. But in America the tradition of carving pumpkins is known to have preceded the Great Famine period of Irish immigration, and the tradition of carving vegetable lanterns may also have been brought over by the Scottish or English; documentation is unavailable to establish when or by whom. The carved pumpkin was associated generally with harvest time in America, and did not become specifically associated with Halloween until the mid to late 19th century.

The imagery surrounding Halloween is largely an amalgamation of the Halloween season itself, nearly a century of work from American filmmakers and graphic artists, and a rather commercialized take on the dark and mysterious. Halloween imagery tends to involve death, magic, or mythical monsters. Common Halloween characters include ghosts, ghouls, witches, vampires, bats, owls, crows, vultures, haunted houses, pumpkinmen, black cats, aliens, spiders, goblins, zombies, mummies, skeletons, and demons. Particularly in America, symbolism is inspired by classic horror films, which contain fictional figures like Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and The Mummy. More modern horror antagonists like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, and the Jigsaw Killer have also become associated with the holiday. Homes are often decorated with these symbols around Halloween.

Black and orange are the traditional colors of Halloween.

Happy Birthday Mafaldinha!!!

The morning after

the sun was shinning, so we woke up and went out for a coffee! Once again, nearby the sea! On our way to the morning coffee, we passed by Guincho, and... there was the Surf Pro Jnr National Championship (one more stop). Anyway, first we had a coffee, then we watched a bit of the championship... and there was still time to pass through the climbing rocks, and to buy a watch! ;P
Busy, busy morning...

Another Big Day

After all I was wrong... Today I went again to the University again: my sis defended her thesis! ;) And she is The Master (after me, of course...). To celebrate she invited us to go to the harbor to have a coffee! Nice weather, nice people, nice coffee, nice sea, amazing Sis! THANK YOU!!!

With all of this, I missed Rita's dinner.. Sorry girl!

(Pictures available soon)

Playin' on the radio

when I woke up:

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Running against Tagus

Every year there is a running near the sea, sponsored and organized by Nike! 10Km under the sun... This time I joined the team: I was the only girl! Ehehe and my tie was not that good: 1h16m. Within 9500 persons, I was 6282 classified!

After the long run, my afternoon was spent at a friend's place, basically doing nothing but resting!

PS - We don't choose the color of the t-shirt! It's the same for everybody! And, no, I didn't subscribe the run because of the orange t-shirt! lol

I Recommend...

YESTERDAY EVENING, I WENT TO THE THEATER...

Late Summer

Time: 8PM
Temperature: 24ºC
Do I need to say more?

Free Time

Lately I spend part of my day watching Grey! Yes... I know the story, but I like it! Here are some nice quotes! Ehehe

"At some point you have to make a decision. Barriers don't keep others out. They fence you in. Life is messy, that's how we're made. So you can waste your life drawing lines or you can live your life crossing them. But there are some lines that are way too dangerous to cross. Here's what I know. If you're willing to throw caution to the wind and take a chance, the view from the other side is spectacular."

"Knowing is better than wondering, walking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure beats the hell out of never trying"

"Once in a while, once in a blue moon, people will surprise you. Once in a while people may even take your breath away."

"It's a long road, and when you get to the end of it, you're not going to care about winning. You're just going to be relieved you made it to the finish line."

"Denial. It's not just a river in Egypt, it's a freakin' ocean. So how do you keep from drowning in it?"

"If there's an upside to freefalling, it's the chance you give your friends to catch you"

"BECAUSE...IT'S WHAT JESUS...WOULD FREAKING DO!!!"

"The only people who don't know Derek loves Meredith are Derek and Meredith. How can I compete with that? I can't compete with that."

"No one holds a scalpel until I'm so happy I'm Mary Freaking Poppins."

Let's move to Germany?

Ring, ring...

<-- This can be my next stop!

I just received a phone call.. It was a company from Germany (from Bremerhaven to be precise). They want me to perform an internship, 6 months, near the sea, 100km away from Hamburg. I don't have to concern about where I am going to sleep, they take care of everything. I'm payed, I don't pay taxes or fees, and my salary can improve. It's an European Project, I'm still thinking about what my answer is gonna be!

One more morning

As I was expecting, the weather is still very nice, and I decided to go to guincho on my rollerblades! It was kind of tiring, but very healthy, pleasant, and in the end I had a bonus: the beach was awsome, the water perfect, the sky blue and even "Cabo da Roca" was very clear! But more news were about to arrive.... For now, I just leave the pictures of my morning!

THIS IS MY BEACH!!!

Monday, October 15, 2007

It's Monday

And I don't have anything planned...

Thoughts in my mind: wake up, have breakfast, go to the beach... and why not, run-walk-run there? And stop watching the sea, the sailing boats, enjoying the sun, walking around Cascais...

Tomorrow I'll go skating to the walkside on the beach!

Encosta-te a mim

Since I landed in Portugal, this music is always playing everywhere... And I like it! ;)

Encosta-te a mim,
nós já vivemos cem mil anos.
Encosta-te a mim,
talvez eu esteja exagerando.
Encosta-te a mim,
dá cabo dos teus desenganos
não queiras ver quem eu não sou,
deixa-me chegar.

Chegada da guerra,
fiz tudo p´ra sobreviver, em nome da terra,
no fundo p´ra te merecer
recebe-me bem,
não desencantes os meus passos
faz de mim o teu herói,
não quero adormecer.

Tudo o que eu vi,
estou a partilhar contigo
o que não vivi, hei-de inventar contigo
sei que não sei
às vezes entender o teu olhar
mas quero-te bem,
encosta-te a mim.

[instrumental]

Encosta-te a mim,
desatinamos tantas vezes.
Vizinha de mim,
deixa ser meu o teu quintal,
recebe esta pomba que não está armadilhada
foi comprada, foi roubada, seja como foi.

Eu venho do nada
porque arrasei o que não quis
em nome da estrada, onde só quero ser feliz.
Enrosca-te a mim,
vai desarmar a flor queimada,
vai beijar o homem-bomba, quero adormecer.

Tudo o que eu vi,
estou a partilhar contigo, e o que não vivi,
um dia hei-de inventar contigo
sei que não sei, às vezes entender o teu olhar,
mas quero-te bem.

Encosta-te a mim

Encosta-te a mim

Quero-te bem.

Encosta-te a mim.

Holidays.. Who? Me?!

Today is my first day of holidays...At least in theory, but I have the interview at Nestle.. and the traffic in the morning is annoying, so I woke up very early! The interview was pleasant, really nice talk of 1h30m! =D I have to wait for news....

My afternoon was spent watching some tv series and trying to rest, but I can't sleep during the day so I haven't rested that much. Then, while I was doing nothing, I received a text message so I went to Lisbon to have dinner with Zé and Rita (oh no! Not again!!). A dinner, near the river, watching the boats, the lights, 21ºC at night, no wind, warm night... Summer night!

Graduation Day

From now on I'm officially a Master Engineer! It sounds good, but... NOW WHAT?? Well, tomorrow I have an interview at Nestlé, and I received an e-mail from Nestlé USA.. A proposal of work, and I have already applied, I just have to be patient!

Meanwhile, I received a call from Rita, she's arriving at Lisbon and we are going to have lunch near the river, having some sun! Then, in the afternoon, we are going to "dive in the bottom of the ocean"....

Beach.. At last!

I love when it's weekend, the weather is nice, and you can't work for one or another reason (I don't want to talk about it)! Well, this was pretty much my last days... Rita arrived from Netherlands and she came to my place to spend some days! Yes, we finally had our first days of sun, of beach, of holidays this year.. It sounds weird, specially for those who live nearby the sea (like me).... Here I leave some pictures! I look much more healthier now! ;)

The true dream

We convince ourselves it's better that we never dream at all. But, the strongest of us, the most determined of us, holds on to the dream or we find ourselves faced with a fresh dream we never considered. We wake to find ourselves, against all odds, feeling hopeful. And, if we're lucky, we realize in the face of everything, in the face of life the true dream is being able to dream at all.

Tiring Day

I'm tired! This day was full of last minute plans.. I first woke up very early to attend a thesis presentation of a friend, but... my car was with some problem so I was late, and finally I haven't attended that presentation. However, I was there, so in the end of everything I went to my supervisor's room to ask and schedule my presentation but she was having a coffee, so I wen to the bar and she was already in her room again. Anyway, I gave up and had lunch with my friend.. Then, I had to "waste" time doing something until 5pm, so we decided to go to the cinema at 2.30pm! It was a nice movie, but it finished almost at 5pm, so we had to hurry to the university. There, I met my supervisor and I talk so much that I delayed her for a meeting, now I have more work to do and my presentation is not scheduled yet! BAHHH!!! I'M GOING CRAZY! Ad tonight my plan is work.. (booring.. I know, but that's life!)

BTW, Rita.. Are you coming for the weekend? =D
